VIPKID gets great reviews, and it’s 100% remote. You never have to leave your home to make between $14 and $22 per hour. In fact, you get incentive bonus payments just for showing up to work on time! So how do you get started? What does it take to be a VIPKID instructor? Here’s what you need to know about the program.
What is VIPKID?
VIPKID is a video-based learning program designed to teach kids in China. The program is headquartered in Beijing, and it caters to kids between the ages of 4 and 12. You’ll never have to teach high school level material to these kids.
You’ll need a few things to qualify for a position with VIPKID. First, the program will not accept any instructor who doesn’t hold a Bachelor’s degree. There are no exceptions. It doesn’t matter what your degree is in, but you’ve absolutely got to have one.
Second, you’ll need to meet a few technical requirements. You can work from anywhere in the world, but you’ll need to have a stable internet connection. Connecting from your cell phone doesn’t count!
Finally, your laptop or computer will need to have a camera. Once you make sure you meet these criteria, you’re ready to schedule an interview!
Interviews at VIPKID
Your interview will take place online. You’ll sign up for an interview time slot, and you can log into the portal up to an hour before your VIPID interview begins. We recommend that you do just that. Use the time to check the lighting in the room, and to test your equipment. You’ll also want to make sure there’s nothing weird in the background. Put the laundry away before your interview starts!
If there are no available time slots for an interview, you can record one then submit it to VIPKID. You can find complete instructions on the company website.
There are a few things the interview team at VIPKID is looking for. First, you’ll need to make sure that you speak clearly and concisely. Match your speech to the grade level of the student. They’ll also evaluate you based on your mastery of English and your ability to help kids learn the language. They’re looking for positive correction – so don’t bark at those kids!
You’ll find a complete list of interview evaluation criteria online. Be sure to look them over carefully before your scheduled time!
What does VIPKID Pay?
Again, VIPKID will pay between $14-22 per hour. A lot of that depends on your interview, though. If you don’t interview well (some of us don’t!) don’t worry. Your minimum pay will never be less than $7.
You’ll receive higher pay if you show up to work on time. How many bosses can you say do that?! You’ll be rewarded with up to an additional dollar each time you show up for your scheduled meeting on time.
You’ll also receive additional pay based on the number of classes you teach each month. As more students continue to book with you, your pay will grow. In a sense, VIPKID is giving you a promotion for continued hard work.
When you work with VIPKID, you’ll be an independent contractor. You won’t get a tax form, so be sure you keep track of all your payments. You’ll need to report these manually to the IRS or whichever national office you pay taxes to. You’ll also be hired on a contract basis of 6 months. At the end of 6 months, you’ll be evaluated for a raise.
If you’re looking to help kids and to make money from home, go check out VIPKID. We’re hearing great things about the company, and it may be a perfect match for you! Be sure to check back in and let us know what you think!
